The Council is involved in several mmajor Interreg funding bids worth almost 70m euro, and a further 20 to 30m euro in cross-border projects led by Donegal Council, and other bodies.

Local projects include a 20m euro bid for a multimodal Travel Hub in the city, which would replace Derry’s train station and link up other transport services, as well as around 18m euro for the North West greenways.

The Council has undertaken a number of measures to try yto maximise funding for the area before the UK leaves the EU.

In a report brought before its Governance and Strategic Planning Committee this week, it was stated that the the main implication of a Chancellor’s statement back in August “is that only projects which have been signed before the Autumn Statement in November will be guaranteed.”

There are also implications for a multi-million funding package under the Rural Development Fund, while Derry & Strabane is also hoping to get around £7.5m through Peace IV funding, for projects including the Clondermott Commmunity Sports facility and the Riverine project in the Strabane District.

The report states that the EU Structural Funds “provide crucial funding that delivers vital benefits to our residentsand local stakeholders in the community and business sectors.”
