The number of people shopping in Derry’s Foyleside Shopping Centre during the festive season is expected to top two million by the end of the month, it has been revealed.
Centre manager Fergal Rafferty said more than one million shoppers had been through the doors in the first three weeks of December alone. He said overall Christmas trade was up 5% on 2012 and sales of the centre’s gift vouchers had hit a record high.
“The last quarter of 2013 has been exceptional with a great kick-off for Christmas trading with the Lumiere Festival bringing 180,000 visitors to the city.”
Mr Rafferty said some of the centre’s stores reported their busiest-ever trading day on December 23.
He added that Foyleside will welcome a number of new retailers to the centre next year and said the City of Culture momentum “will hopefully continue throughout 2014 and beyond”.
