Cathal ‘goes for it’ with College support

A second year Media student at the Limavady Campus at North West Regional College recently completed the Invest NI ‘Go For It’ programme, and with the support of the College’s Enterprise Champions, is making progress in the plans to establish his own business.

Cathal O’Kane, who is currently studying on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in iMedia at the Main Street Campus in Limavady, is availing of the advice and support of the lecturers and Business development staff at North West Regional College as he finalises plans to set up a graphic design business.

Terry Boylan, Enterprise Champion at North West Regional College, arranged for Cathal to meet with a bank manager, Eamon Crossan, Manager of First Trust Bank, Limavady, to assist in the development of his business plan.

“This let Cathal see what kind of questions a bank will ask of any new business”, said Terry, “and it was very useful to see the banker give Cathal the benefit of his years of experience. As well as asking questions, Eamon Crossan made suggestions and gave pointers for how to make your business succeed. Don’t be afraid of your bank, remember that banks want their clients to succeed and prosper”.

North West Regional College has dedicated Enterprise Champions based at its three main campuses in Limavady, Derry~Londonderry and Strabane, who are lecturers designated to help students explore entrepreneurial skills and to the consider the business options available to them.

The College has been hosting free workshops for students across the campuses, with opportunities to hear from local business representatives about their experience of enterprise and industry. Cathal is one of the first to take an idea and develop it into a real business plan.

Cathal said, “It was a really useful hour. I gained an insight into what a bank wants from a business - I found Mr Crossan to be highly approachable with a lot of business insight and he provided me with solid advice about ways to increase my customer base. Now I will get down to finalising my Business Plan and providing fresh new graphic design ideas for my customers in Park and beyond!”
