Road works aimed at improving traffic congestion at one of the Waterside’s busiest roads will run for the next six weeks.
Waterside SDLP cCuncillor Gerard Diver said the works at Clooney Terrace, which got underway on Monday, were much needed.
“Clooney Terrace is a busy thoroughfare and can be a real bottleneck at times so, without a doubt, there is a need to reconfigure the road layout to accommodate traffic moving through and to allow drivers to park.”
The £130,000 Roads Service scheme, funded by the Department of Social Development, will see a lay-by added to the street while existing paving will also be improved.
“Roads Service will be providing a lay-by outside the shops and upgrading the footways with paving,” a Roads Service spokeswoman said..
“The lay-by will alleviate congestion in the area by improving parking provision. The improvements to the footway will enhance the appearance of this commercial area of the Waterside.”
She said the road will remain open but there will be lane closures to allow for the work.
“Access to properties will be maintained, although there will be some disruption for the duration of the works,” she said.
Councillor Diver said despite the disruption the improvements will be worthwhile.
“There are a lot of fast food outlets in the vicinity, so it is a busy area. It is hoped the new layout will make the area function a lot better, which is in everyone’s interests.”
