Derry’s Chamber of Commerce has announced that SONI (System Operator for Northern Ireland) is taking on the role of the Chamber’s strategic business partner.

SONI runs and develops the high voltage electricity grid and one of the company’s key drivers is to ensure that NI has the power it needs to support business and industry.

Chamber President Gavin Killeen said: “As the body responsible for NI’s electricity infrastructure, SONI is an important strategic asset to Northern Ireland, ensuring the safe and secure delivery of our electricity. That is vital to the North West.

“SONI is seeking approval for the North South interconnector, a vital link that will provide energy security and market competition and cut energy costs. The Chamber is fully supportive of the North South interconnector, which we believe is necessary to supply Northern Ireland with secure, sustainable and affordable electricity.

“This is a natural partnership between two organisations with common strategic interests and objectives. Energy supply is an essential ingredient for a successful business. We can do little without a sustainable and affordable energy supply.”

Commenting on the partnership, Robin McCormick, General Manager of SONI, said: “A strong electricity grid is the back bone of the economy and we want to see every part of Northern Ireland thrive. To do this we need to develop the grid through key projects like the North South Interconnector. Working hand-in-hand with the business community is vital.

“Even though the proposed route of the interconnector is some 60 miles away, the Londonderry Chamber of Commerce has grasped its significance to the North West and the local economy.

“The Chamber is a vibrant and progressive organisation, whose voice extends far beyond the city and we are delighted to be supporting it.”

SONI will also be the main event partner of the Chamber’s annual President’s Dinner which takes place on Friday, October 21, at the Best Western White Horse Hotel, Campsie, Derry.
