Derry unemployment continues to rise

The number of people claiming the dole in Derry has risen by 10% over the past year.

New figures released today show that a total of 5,875 are currently receiving unemployment related benefits in the city.

The unemployment rate in Derry (8.2% of the working age population) remains the highest among the north’s 26 local council areas.

Over the last 12 months unemployment has increased by 9.4%

Across the north more than 60,000 people are now claiming unemployment related benefits.
