A start up Eglinton confectionary company is to go head to head with some of the most innovative up and coming businesses in the UK for a chance to pitch to business magnate Richard Branson.

Flossie’s Fudge - which has been making waves across Northern Ireland with their delicious home-made treats in a variety of experimental and traditional flavours, is pitching for the chance to win £150,000 of business and marketing support under Branson’s Virgin brand.

Debbie Leslie, who developed the Flossie’s Fudge brand with the support of her daughter Sophie, said the price would be a “game changer” for the brand - which has big ambitions.

“We have been doing really well, but this would take us to a whole new level,” Debbie said. “To get the attention of Richard Branson and the support of the marketing team of Virgin would be an amazing asset to us and our plans for the future.”

The brand has already been recognised in the prestigious Great Taste Awards, and they have travelled around Northern Ireland attending high profile events such as the Irish Restaurant Awards.

It has been a rollercoaster of a ride for Debbie who started the business just over four years ago when Sophie, then 16, took an interested in making fudge at home.

“Sophie had a talent for putting flavours together,” Debbie said.

“There were combinations she came up with that I thought just wouldn’t work but they did.”

Popular in the range are Cranberry and Orange fudge, Raspberry and White Chocolate fudge and their award winning Lightly Malted fudge.

While Sophie is now studying for a degree in English Literature at Queen’s in Belfast, Debbie has taken on the business full time - and her ambitions are impressive.

The product is sold as a luxury treat - with all natural ingredients, only of the highest quality. The hope is that they will progress from markets and craft fairs to the luxury confectionary market, with plans to pitch to Selfridges, Fortnum and Mason and Harrods.

The support of the ‘Pitch to Rich’ prize would make this goal all the more realistic.

But to achieve this goal, Flossie’s Fudge need the people of Derry to get behind them - in force to secure them the chance to move onto the next stage of the competition.
