SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has welcomed the economic partnership which has been forged between Digital Derry and East London’s Tech City Investment Organisation that will hopefully see 100 new companies set up in Derry by 2015.

Mr Durkan said: “This shows that Derry is open for business and is a tribute to [Digital Derry champion] Mark Nagurski and others who have worked so hard to make Digital Derry such a huge success.

“It is a timely reminder of the positive links that can happen between enterprise in Derry and an international centre of commerce.

“This collaboration will see the creation of much-needed jobs in Derry and will draw other companies to invest here.

“A lot of work is going on in our city to develop our digital economy and this shows the success that can be achieved in this market.

“I encourage other investors and e-businesses to look to Derry for inspiration, ideas and talent.”

The link up between Tech City and Digital Derry was announced in the Millennium Forum this morning by the British Prime Minister’s Ambassador to Tech City Ben Hammersley, the high-profile editor-in-large with the magazine Wired.

It’s hoped that it will lead to investment of several million pounds in local digital start-ups in the next three years, driven by investor events in both Derry and London.
