A vigil in solidarity with the people of Greece following their historic ‘no’ vote in the Referendum on austerity was held in Derry last night.
Derry Sinn Féin hosted the vigil at Free Derry Wall.
Meanwhile, speaking from Athens, Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson said Greece is now a beacon of hope in the campaign against austerity.
Ms Anderson said; “The resounding ‘no’ vote from the people of Greece to reject austerity is a victory for democracy.
“Throughout the evening there was a palpable sense of optimism as the results came in from all parts of the country.
“Greece is now a beacon of hope in the wider campaign against austerity.”
Ms Anderson added that was “an honour and a privilege to stand with Syriza and the people of Greece” last night.
“I joined the Greek people on the streets of Athens to celebrate their rejection of austerity.
“At the same time republicans were on the streets of Derry and elsewhere standing in solidarity with the people of Greece.
“The Greek people have made their voices heard loud and clear in this referendum.
“Their voices must be listened to by the neoliberal elites who attempted to impose further austerity on Greece.
“Fresh negotiations are needed to secure a fair and sustainable resolution to the Greek debt crisis in line with the democratic will expressed by the people of Greece.”
