Almost 150 homes in the Shantallow area of the city were left without power on Saturday evening.
The power cut, which occurred just before 6pm, affected around 140 homes in the Ardnamoyle Park area.
Sinn Féin Councillor Tony Hassan said it happened at the worst time of the day for local residents.
“I was contacted by residents from the Ardnamoyle Park area of Shantallow just before teatime on Saturday night to say their electric was off.
“I contacted NIE straight away and visited the scene. This could not have happened at a worse time of the day for any household.
“Around 140 homes were affected by the power cut which was internal to the houses and did not affect the streetlights,” he said.
Power was restored by 9pm on Saturday evening.
