A steel manufacturing plant at Maydown is to close with the loss of eight jobs, it was announced yesterday.

Speaking in the Assembly in response to a question from Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin, enterprise minister Arlene Foster confirmed that the Forth and Foyle company, which has a plant at Maydown, is to close at the end of the month.

Ms Foster said 22 jobs will be lost in total, eight in Derry, ten at Ballylumford, and four in Scotland.

Ms McLaughlin described the news as “another blow” to the north west economy.

She also called on Invest NI to ensure that the rights of the workers are protected. “If these jobs cannot be saved then Invest NI must ensure that all employees receive the maximum redundancy payments, including protection of any pension benefits. They should also be offered access to retraining programmes to increase their chances of finding new employment,” the Foyle MLA said.

SDLP MLA Colm Eastwood said; “It is vital that in this period of dreadful uncertainty, two months from Christmas, that employees at the firm are provided with as much certainty as possible on their future. It is vital that all our statutory agencies provide them with all the help, support and retraining possible.”
