Jobless figures down on last year

Unemployment figures for January show Limavady has the fourth highest number of claimants in the 26 Council district areas.

The January statistics from the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Investment show 1,558 people are claiming unemployment benefits; 1,142 men and 416 females.

The figures represents a total of 7.1per cent of the working age population, and a change of 4.4 per cent over last month. However, the figure is down 1.3 per cent compared to the same time last year.

Topping the league is Derry, where 8.4 per cent of the working age population are claimants, followed by Belfast at 7.3 per cent and Strabane at 7.2 per cent.
