Residents and staff in Galliagh, Hatmore and Strathfoyle have helped ensure the Spar stores in each estate have has secured its own defibrillator. These are among over 100 public access defibrillators installed across the north over recent weeks.

The campaign has been spearheaded by the Henderson Group, owners of the Spar, Eurospar and Vivo brand franchises. The group launched a campaign for their retailers to fundraise with the public to install Automated External Defibrillators, whilst raising awareness about CPR.

During the fundraising at the end of 2015, the local stores raised £1,500 for each defibrillator and its temperature controlled cabinet, through various activities locally. Staff also worked with local CPR trainers, resulting in many now being trained in life-saving technique.

Sinn Fein Councillor for Galliagh Tony Hassan said: “I welcome the fact that there is now this facility because it is much needed for the health and well being of local people and could potentially save lives.”

Bronagh Luke from the Henderson Group said: “The defibrillators that have been installed are automatic, so no training is required for use.

“As soon as one is activated, the user will be talked through the process by the machine accompanied by visual aids whilst the Ambulance Service operator remains on the phone.

“To know that one of these defibrillators could save a life makes a huge difference.”
