A Derry legal firm was among the top ten recipients of legal aid fees in the last year. Local solicitors firm, Quigley, Grant and Kyle received £775,389.88, according to new figures released by the NI Legal Commission. The figures detail the 100 solicitor practices and barristers receiving the highest payments from legal aid in the North in the year to March 2013.
The Derry firm was ranked tenth highest in the North in terms of legal aid fees paid to solicitors.
Other local firms which made the list include MacDermott and McGurk and partners, which received £685,079.33 and were ranked 15th in the table, and John Fahy and Co. which received £566,823.52, the 25th highest in the North.
Dungiven-born barrister and ‘Journal’ columnist, Joe Brolly, was ranked 31st on the barristers’ list and received £208,946.24.
The figures were revealed by the NI Legal Services Commission and Commission chairman Ronnie Spence said: “The commission remains committed to transparency in accounting for significant sums of public money paid out of the legal aid fund. This year the commission has published the total payments made to barristers rather than, as in previous years, reporting some of these payments as made through solicitors. I acknowledge the continued co-operation of the Law Society and the Bar Council in the publication of this information.”
