Massive ‘Ras’ heading for Inishowen

The efforts of local cycling enthusiasts to promote Inishowen in a major way have borne fruit big time with the confirmation this week the biggest race in the Irish cycling calendar, the An Post Ras, will come to the peninsula this year.

It is expected to be a massive event attracting thousands of visitors.

Lee Tedstone, Chairman of Inishowen Tourism, expressed his delight, stating: “Inishowen is fast becoming a leading cycle destination due to the dedication and professionalism of the North Pole Cycling Club and their efforts to raise the profile among national and international cycling organisations.

“The An Post Rás quite literally puts you on the map for cycling – with a valuable spin off for the local economy. Inishowen Tourism looks forward to working in partnership with the North Pole Cycling Club, Buncrana Chamber of Commerce, Buncrana Town Council, Donegal County Council and Failte Ireland North West, in delivering a truly memorable 60th edition of the An Post Ras 2012 in Inishowen and Donegal.”

Inishowen Tourism, with the support of Buncrana Town Council and Buncrana Chamber of Commerce, made contact with the organisers of the An Post Rás requesting them to consider a Stage Finish in Inishowen for the 2012 An Post Rás Route.

Speaking on the announcement of the route for this year’s Ras, organiser Dermot Dignam said “The fact that 4 stages are taking place in Donegal is due in no small measure to the enthusiasm and active participation by Jennifer O’Donnell, Project Coordinator Inishowen Tourism who helped establish contacts in the county. We look forward to enjoying the magnificent scenery and hospitality of the county and hope that corner of the country reaps the benefit from the exposure.”

The Ras starts on May 20th.
