Derry’s Tower Museum is set to benefit from a funding boost of £157,750 which will lead to extensive work being carried out at the city centre tourist spot.

The money, coming from the UK City of Culture Capital Fund, will be discussed at Derry City Council’s Development Committee meeting on Tuesday where members are expected to welcome the significant cash boost.

It’s believed the financial boost will be used to make significant improvements at the already popular museum including revamping the Craft Village entrance by creating two new shop fronts in order to strengthen the link between the village and the museum.

Plans are also expected to include enhancing the visitor services at the Craft Village entrance through fixtures and fittings, design and signage.

The money will also be used to enhance the appearance and facilities at the main reception area of the museum, the creation of a new “Discovery Area” in the Tower Museum which will involve the design and installation of a range of high and low-tech inter-actives looking at the Story of Derry and Armada Shipwreck exhibitions providing greater access and learning for all ages.”

The Town Clerk’s report stated ahead of Tuesday’s meeting: “The project is aimed at improving the access and visitor experience at the Tower Museum, the flagship museum of the Heritage and Museum Service.

“The Tower Museum is well established as a must see attraction in the city where visitors can get an insight into our unique heritage. The Museum provides an essential starting point for visitors to understand the city’s development and will be an integral part of the City of Culture programme for 2013. The key aim of the project is to allow for visitors to the Tower Museum to interact better with the exhibitions and to improve the museum’s customer service and facilities.”
