DSD Minister Nelson McCausland and Professor Jackie McCoy from the School for Social Enterprises in Ireland launch a masterclass designed to encourage the private, public and third sectors to Switch On to social enterprise. The event, which is free to attend, will take place on Wednesday 13th June at the BEAM Social Enterprise Centre in Derry~Londonderry

The fourth event in a series of masterclasses aimed at uncovering the true value and potential of social enterprise for the private, public and third sectors, officially launched on June 1 by Minister Nelson McCausland.

The lunch-time event, which will focus on ‘Transition from Community/Voluntary to Social Enterprise’, will take place at the new BEAM Social Enterprise Centre in Derry~Londonderry on Wednesday 13th June.

The series is being co-funded by the Department for Social Development who will have a key speaker at the event.

The masterclass series is a joint venture between the School for Social Enterprises in Ireland, the Ulster Community Investment Trust and Podiem Ltd. Speaking at the launch Professor Jackie McCoy from the School for Social Enterprises in Ireland explained:

“The series is designed to help those within the private and public sectors to better understand what Social Enterprise is and how they stand to benefit from engaging with the social economy. The event on June 13th will also provide those within the broad third sector with practical information that will help them when considering how they can make the transition from more traditional models of Community & Voluntary sector organisations to Social Enterprise as a viable and sustainable alternative.”

Delegates will hear from Fionnuala Deane, MD of Dog Ears, a Derry-based Children’s Media Company that has set out on a mission to promote fun and interactive new ways to increase literacy among our young people. In 2011 they launched Miss Rosie Red and already RTE has expressed an interest in turning the illustrated book into a TV series. The App has been selling strongly in places as far apart as the Middle East and Canada.

Also speaking at the event will be Eamonn Deane, co-founder of the Holywell Trust in Derry. A Social Entrepreneur in his own right, Eamonn has written extensively on community development and was the first recipient of Community Relations Council Lifetime Achievement Award in April 2006. The event will be chaired by Micheal Pyner (former CEO of London’s Shoreditch Trust) who has founded award-winning Development Trusts, Restaurants, Well Being Centre’s, affordable Workspace Centres and Arts Projects.

The wider series, entitled ‘Social Enterprise Means Business’, is supported by the Department of Enterprise Trade & Investment, Invest Northern Ireland, Department for Social Development, The Flax Trust and Ulster Bank. The masterclass is free to attend. For more information on the event and to book a place, visit www.podiem.com/socialeconomy , call 028 9076 1030 or email socialeconomy@podiem.com
