Christmas has come early for Claudy butchers O’Kane Meats, owned by brothers Michael and Kieran O’Kane as the shop has recently won three awards at the Northern Ireland Elite Butchers product evaluations; picking up prestigious Gold Awards for their stuffed turkey breast, 21-day aged steak roast and their fire cracker pork sausages.

O’Kane Meats is already renowned in the North West for its speciality meat products and it also supplies delicious hot food, pre-cooked meals and party food.

O’Kane Meats has won numerous competitions over the years and the shop’s latest success came at the Elite Butchers’ event at CAFRE Loughry Campus in Cookstown when the judging panel carried out blind tasting of the products entered into the event.

Des Bradey of Loughry Campus said “This year has seen the best entry yet, with some stiff competition from all who entered. Our judging panel is made up of retired butchers, chefs, spice suppliers and quality control students. The panel are asked to judge on appearance of the product, raw, shrinkage in the cooking and taste. Taste is the key element of the assessment.”

A prize giving dinner was held at the Glenavon Hotel, Cookstown and some of the top Northern Ireland retail butchers and their guests were in attendance. The guest speaker was Paul Clarke, news reader for UTV and he also presented the awards. Paul Clarke commended the butchers and urged support for local trade and home grown products.

O’Kane Meats haas won a total of 110 awards for their products since their business was established in 1988. On winning 3 Gold Awards, Kieran O’Kane commented: “Winning these awards is fantastic. We are delighted and we put our success down to our dedicated staff and loyal customers.”

Michael O’Kane added: “It was great to take part with the other Elite butchers from throughout Northern Ireland and to achieve these three awards for our products. All our meat and turkey is sourced from Northern Ireland and we are proud of the hard work all the local farmers do. Without this high quality meat, we would not be able to produce such high quality products.”

O’Kane Meats are now looking forward to Christmas and being able to offer their new and loyal customers great meat products with confidence.
