One-way traffic system proposed for Park Avenue
Residents living in the Park Avenue area of the city have been encouraged to have their say on proposals for a new one-way traffic system in the area.
Sinn Féin councillor Maeve McLaughlin made the appeal to local residents ahead of a DRD Roads Service consultation on the proposals.
Colr. McLaughlin said local residents have been calling for a solution to traffic congestion problems in the area for several years.
“Traffic congestion along Park Avenue has had an impact on the quality of life of local residents and businesses for many years. Because of the geography of the area it’s clear that finding a solution that could help alleviate the problems there with traffic congestion is not going to be easy,” she said.
Colr. McLaughlin said her party carried out a survey in the area to assess residents’ views on the traffic situation.
“In 2008 Sinn Féin did a door-to-door in the streets along Park Avenue and got a petition signed calling for urgent traffic reform in the area which has been a major problem there, particularly at peak times of the day. Since then there has been little movement in getting a resolution.
“I have been lobbying with local residents for some time to try and find solutions to the traffic problems in Park Avenue. DRD Roads Service have now put forward proposals for a one-way system in the area. These are draft proposals and are of course subject to public consultation,” she said.
The Northland colr. encouraged local people to look at the proposals. “A copy of the proposals can be viewed in Glenview Community Centre, Cedar Street and I would encourage residents to have their say. And do not hesitate to get in contact me if I can be of any further assistance,” she said.
