Northern Ireland Electricity have warned anyone cutting down trees or hedges about the dangers of damaging overhead lines.

The warning follows an incident in Claudy where a homeowner felled a tree across high voltage overhead lines, bringing down the lines and disrupting electricity supplies to over 150 customers in the surrounding area for four hours.

“Luckily in this incident no-one was injured,” Natasha Nicholl, NIE Customer Relations Manager for the Claudy area said.

“We would encourage anyone felling or pruning trees near electricity equipment to take extra caution and to be aware of overhead lines and stay wires at all times.

“Our safety message is clear – look up, look out and stay away from overhead lines. Contact NIE on 08457 643 643 or visit our website nie.co.uk for more safety advice
