Public sector workers to protest in Derry

Public sector workers are set to protest in Derry later today.

Members of NIPSA and Unison will gather at Guildhall Square at 12:30pm to highlight their concerns over pay.

“Our members demand that they receive a decent pay award after 4 years of almost a zero increase in their rates of pay,”Alison Millar, NIPSA, Deputy General Secretary, said.

In three of the last four years staff working in education, housing and local government did not receive a pay rise while last year they received a below inflation increase of 1%.

Ms Millar said some members were subsidising their income with tax credits and other benefits.

Anne Speed, UNISON Head of Bargaining & Representation said: “The politicians of all persuasions need to take account of this stark reality. NI reps on the NJC should stand up for the workers in this region and insist that they receive a decent pay increase.”
