Derry woman Ciara Duddy is giving away wedding dresses!

The proprietor of Beautiful Day Bridal Cottage in Greysteel has thrown her weight behind a world record breaking attempt by the Foyle Hospice which aims to see 2013 women in wedding dresses on Derry’s Peace Bridge in April.

And to help with the attempt, Ciara has cleared out her stock room and donated wedding dresses from seasons gone by. The Foyle Hospice will be hiring these dresses out for the day for just £20, and they’ll later be sold at the Hospice charity shops.

And Ciara is doing it all in memory of her dad’s sister Mamie McKinney, who passed away in the Foyle Hospice nine years ago.

“My aunt Mamie spent three months in the Foyle Hospice,” explained Ciara. “She was looked after so well. I think sometimes only when it affects your family and you are in there, that you realise how much great work is done at the Hospice.”

Owning her own bridal shop, Ciara had thought about organising a similar event herself, so jumped at the idea of helping with the Foyle Hospice event.

“I decided to do a clear out and I had lots of dresses from seasons gone by so I decided to donate them. I hope it will encourage others to take part.” Ciara’s message is that if you can’t wear your own dress, donate it to the Foyle Hospice, or give it to someone else to wear on the day.

“You don’t have to be a bride,” she said. “all you need is a proper wedding dress. The wedding dress can also be from any cultural background such as an Indian Sari. Wear your mum’s, your aunt’s or try and borrow one or go to a charity shop. I’ll even be wearing my own dress which my mammy Rosemary made for me when I got married. She has had to make a few alterations though! Mammy will be wearing a dress on the day too. Everyone says they’d love to wear their wedding dress again; well this is your chance.”

The event will take place on Saturday, April 27, 2013. For further information go on Facebook and search ‘brides across the bridge’ or contact Rachel at Foyle Hospice on 028 71359888 or email rachelbruce@foylehospice.com.
