Is all that Christmas shopping stressing you out? Do you yearn to escape from all those queues for an hour or two?

Then you need to make good your escape and point your vehicle, taxi or feet in the direction of the Everglades Hotel.

The four-star Hastings-Group owned hotel on the outskirts of the city, is an absolute haven away from the hustle and bustle of the Christmas rush.

There’s something about the location of the Everglades which makes it feel like an oasis befitting its name.

There is ample car parking, the staff are welcoming and helpful and there is plenty of space for people to spread themselves out and chill.

Even better, there is no-pressure to vacate your comfy seat in the Library Bar!

It will always be more busy at weekends so Tuesday was ideal for a very relaxed Festive Afternoon Tea for two last week with my friend Dee.

After a cheery greeting at reception, a member of staff promptly arrived to show us to our table which had been set with some of the tempting savoury and sweet delights on offer to whet our appetite.

Waitress Therese was on hand to explain what we would be sampling; it’s amazing just how much you can actually fit onto a cake stand!

The best thing to tell yourself when about to embark on a speciality Afternoon Tea is that the bite-size portions mean you can eat until your heart’s content.

I had saved myself by eating sparingly and healthily earlier in the day so that come 3pm, a little festive indulgence was consumed guilt-free.

There are four varieties of Afternoon Tea to choose from, three of which can include an alcoholic beverage - a glass of mulled wine, Prosecco or Champagne.

Myself and my friend were happy to settle for tea and coffee on this occasion, although the versions with an accompanying tipple will definitely be reserved for another day!

You will absolutely be spoiled for choice with a selection of finger sandwiches with fillings ranging from smoked salmon and cucumber to roast turkey with cranberry.

The ‘Legenderry’ pastry assortment is a joy to behold; the warm mini plum pudding was my favourite with the St Brendan’s Liqueur and Chocolate Cream to die-for!

There is even a Festive Cocktail Menu, with such exotic names as Bombay Berry Christmas; Christmas Dream; and Christmas Cosmo to name but a few, all priced at £6.

So whether it’s Afternoon Tea before, during or after the Christmas rush, make sure to get it on your list. You won’t regret it even if your waistline might! Don’t worry about that until the New Year....
