Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Ó hOisín has said transport minister Danny Kennedy must explain why he delayed announcing a major increase in the cost of signalling on the Derry to Coleraine train line.

Speaking after a meeting of the regional development committee today, the East Derry MLA said: “The huge underestimation of costs for signalling on the Derry to Coleraine line, which saw the costs rise from £20m to £40m, caused widespread concern.

“As a result, the transport minister had to come before the regional development committee today to attempt to explain how this happened.

“The committee was told that the minister was aware of the scale of the underestimation in June yet he did not tell the committee until September.

“Danny Kennedy must explain why he did not tell the scrutiny committee about such a serious development.

“Translink officials also attended today’s meeting to give an update on their procurement process and it is clear the process is a disaster.

“This has led to the delays in the upgrade of the Derry to Coleraine line and in fact we are now being told that it won’t be completed before the end of 2016.”
