Sinn Fein welcome £335m A5 announcement
Sinn Féin’s two Donegal TDs, Pearse Doherty and Padraig Mac Lochlainn, have welcomed the announcement that the A5 dual carraigeway will be built, with the sections between Derry and Strabane and Omagh and Aughnacloy due to go to construction before the end of the year.
The Donegal TDs called on the Irish government to reconsider its commitment to the Northwest Motorway.
Deputy Mac Lochlainn said: “A lot of work has been done behind the scenes by Sinn Féin led by Martin McGuinness to ensure that this infrastructure project is delivered. I want to congratulate him on this announcement.
“This is a welcome boost for Donegal and the whole Northwest.
“It will open up the Northwest, cut travelling times and make the region more attractive for business and tourism. It will also create thousands of jobs during the construction phase of the project.
“When Sinn Féin’s Conor Murphy was Minister for Regional Development, he ensured that contractors who are awarded state contracts give preferential treatment to long term unemployed and apprentices when hiring for the project. This will be applied to the A5 and should be introduced to all state contracts in the South as well.
Deputy Doherty said: “I would urge the government here to reconsider its commitment to the Northwest motorway linking the region to the rest of the island.
“Aside of the obvious benefits for the whole island of this project, the commitment to funding was part of the St Andrew’s agreement and should never have been reneged on.”
£335 has been pledged for the A5 work at this time.
