Social housing sites for more than 300 homes in Derry have been “lost”, DSD Minister Nelson McCausland has told SDLP MLA Colum Eastwood.
Responding to an Assembly Question, the DSD minister revealed that plans for a total of 318 houses on three sites at Buncrana Road/Springtown Road (250), Creggan Country Park (52) and Rathmore Road (16) have been scrapped from the Derry City Council Social Housing Development Programme.
The revelation followed recent confirmation from the housing minister that the number of social housing units planned for Derry over the next two years has been slashed dramatically. Now only 454 new social homes are to be built in the city by 2016, not the scheduled 788 homes. With more than 3,000 people currently on the housing waiting list, the Derry MLA has demanded a full explanation for the loss of the “essential sites”.
