BRANDYWELL Stadium and indeed the city is expected to receive an early Christmas present with the news that Derry City Council has secured more than £5m for development from the Department of Culture, Art and Leisure.

The money will fund the construction of a new Stand on the Lone Moor Road side of the ground and a new 4G playing pitch which will replace the current grass surface.

It’s believe the work on the project will commence in late summer next year, causing as little disruption as possible to Derry City’s Football Club’s home games in the Airtricity League.

The cash will also cover the refurbishment of the Southend Park Stand and improvements to both the adjoining Showgrounds and the nearby Daisyfield.

In fact, the Daisyfield venue will see the construction of a second pitch with a 3G surface plus the refurbishment of the current grass pitch.

With the Council currently carrying out public consultation on the future of the Templemore Sports Complex, things appear to be looking up for local sports provision.
