A Derry MLA has welcomed EU moves to tackle cross border mobile phone roaming charges.
The SDLP’s Colum Eastwood says people who live along border areas are only too “well aware of these unfair charges.”
Under the EU plans new caps - no more than 24p per minute to make a roaming call and no more than 59p per megabyte downloaded - will be enforced from July of this year.
“A trip across the border can end up creating sky high bills for consumers. These circumstances have acted as a ridiculous rip-off for those of us who frequently travel between the border,” Mr Eastwood says
“They have had negative effects on both business and ordinary consumers alike.
“These steps by the EU hopefully signal the beginning of the end for these unfair charges.”
The Derry MLA says the latest cap should be seen as “ a first step on the road towards the total eradication of these unfair charges.”
