Work is set to start on a £400,000 transformation of Derry’s riverfront.

The public realm scheme at Queen’s Quay will see 70 existing car parking spaces replaced by a cycle path, pedestrian walkway, street furniture, planting and lighting.

The North’s Social Development minister Nelson McCausland says the scheme, which gets underway on February 20, is one of a number of improvements being made ahead of Derry’s year as City of Culture.

He says the city’s riverfront is “one of the city’s great assets and this project will transform a key part of the riverside.”

“As we gear up for the UK City of Culture celebrations in 2013, this will be one of many schemes to be delivered.

“The environmental improvements will create a vibrant pedestrian setting which will improve access to the new Peace Bridge. I am fully committed to preparing the city for next year’s celebrations.”

The scheme has been funded through the UK City of Culture Infrastructure fund.

Half the city centre is a car park but we still get complaints about the loss of 70 spaces on the waterfront? This is prime land for both development and enjoyment of the River and we use it for car parking. This use was never intended to be long term and was decided at a time when the city had little opportunity for attracting investment. This proposal is excellent and should help to take back the streets from the ever increasing number of cars.

Palpable sarcasm GRC and sadly quite misplaced here. You have been stuck for too long in this city (as seems to a problem with a majority here). Travel a little bit more and see how other towns with a river front setting utilise this type of space. More such decisions will be taken in the future when the council and planning office try to undo some of the damage caused by disastrous planning in the past. For example Quayside seems to have been built back to front, with the car park and loading bays facing onto the river! The current cycle path is a joke in that area - ever tried to cycle on it if there are any pedestrians? No, removal of the car park will allow a proper cycle path to be built and help to enhance the riverside beauty before our new visitors & tourists start arriving next year!

What a great idea, get rid of the much needed car parking spaces, as if the town doesn't already have car parking problem and replace it with a bicyle route, walkway and seating etc all of which are already there. Not to mention the fact that, that area is out of the way and won't be used by many people, but i suppose it'll be somewhere nice for the council workers to sit on a nice day considering it's next door to the council building. Is it any wonder i'm beginning to hate this town more and more every day!
