Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey says the increase in the youth unemployment rate is deeply worrying.
The SDLP politician was speaking after the latest labour market figures showed youth unemployment at 23.5 per cent.
He said: “The new figures are disappointing; especially that youth unemployment continues to increase. We now appear to be above England, Scotland and Wales; for 29 months now, the North has had the second highest unemployment rate.
“A strategy is desperately needed to ensure that we stem the tide of young people who are not in education, employment or training. The characteristics, barriers and experiences of young people who find themselves in this situation are generally complex and multi-layered and a strategy to tackle this crisis must take these factors into account.”
“With strong leadership, our departments could get together to protect the jobs we have and promote new ones.”
