Derry Sinn Féin representative Liam Friel has called on other political parties to support the Sinn Féin motion before the Assembly tomorrow calling for the introduction of legislation to guarantee marriage equality.
Liam Friel said the North of Ireland should follow in the footsteps in England, Scotland and Wales in legalising gay marriage.
“This is an equality issue and Sinn Féin are calling on other political parties to support our motion.
“Marriage equality gives gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender people equal rights under the law in relation to marriage.
“Other jurisdictions on these islands have and are moving forward to ensure marriage equality for all. The North should not be left behind.
“Giving all couples equal marriage rights under the law does not threaten anyone’s beliefs, religious or otherwise. Churches are free to define marriage as they wish but the state has a duty to treat all citizens equally.
“This Assembly needs to send out a clear message to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community that it will support their full rights.”
