All of the boys in seven year-old Cara McAteer’s primary four class must have been green with envy when they saw her emerge from the tunnel at Etihad Stadium holding the hand of Barcelona and Argentina midfielder, Javier Mascherano on Tuesday night.

Cara, who is from the Waterside and at Good Shepherd P.S., won a MasterCard competition to be one of the match mascots at the Champion’s League game between Manchester City and Barcelona.

“Cara was over the moon,” said proud dad and Liverpool supporter, Liam McAteer.

“I don’t support either Manchester City or Barcelona but the fact Cara walked out on the pitch holding former Liverpool player, Javier Mascherano’s hand was good enough for me,” he joked.

Interestingly, Cara’s brother, Aidan, won the same competition last year and walked out on to the pitch at the Emirates Stadium holding the hand of Thiago Alcântara for the game between Arsenal and Bayern Munich.

“It was brilliant for Cara. She got to high five all of the Manchester City players coming into the stadium and she told me that Luis Suarez kissed her hand as they walked out of the tunnel.

“I think with Cara winning this year, and Aidan last year I might enter and try to walk out with Liverpool next year,” joked Liam.
