Three cars were damaged in an incident in the Academy Road area of the city in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Windows of the Ford Fusion, Ford B-Max and Volkswagen Polo were broken and a the PSNI have said it is thought criminals were seeking to gain access to steal any property that might be in the vehicles.

Three males were seen running from the area at about 2am.

Sinn Féin councillor Mickey Cooper condemned the incident. “It absolutely ridiculous that this is happening to resident’s cars. In the current economic climate it is very hard to afford to keep a car on the road at the best of times and no one needs this extra expense and upset. Sadly this seems to be happening on a regular basis in various parts of the city.

“It’s important that if anyone sees people acting suspiciously late at night in the area to contact the police straight away,” he said.

Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to contact police on the 101 non-emergency number or via the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111
