CERN expert to lend expertise to Derry cancer unit

Derry’s new radiotherapy unit could be set to benefit from the expertise of one of the leading figures behind CERN’s hadron collider.
Belfast native Profeesor Steve Myers has agreed to visit Derry and collaborate with the Western Trust on research that could be of use in the new Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin.
The cancer expert met with Derry SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey at CERN in Geneva. Mr Ramsey says Professor Myers has agreed to meet with local health officials.
“I met with Professor Steve Myers who is Director of Accelerators and Technology at CERN in Geneva who have been in the news over recent months relating to the search for the Higgs Boson. Professor Myers, who is originally from Belfast, and his team are working on the advancement of radiotherapy technology as part of their work on utilising the nuclear field for health benefits.
“Professor Myers agreed to my request for him to visit Derry to assist the Western Health Trust in research around radiotherapy which may have huge benefits for the radiotherapy centre and the patients who will use it. He will meet with Senior Health Trust officials to discuss collaboration.”
Mr Ramsey said he is “delighted” to have secured the meeting. He says it could “be the start of a hugely beneficial and exciting partnership that will benefit the people of the North West and beyond. “
