The generosity of Derry Journal readers this week ensured hundreds of people living in destitution in India, were able to enjoy a warm Christmas meal.
Last week an appeal was made to Derry Journal readers from Action With Effect founder, Eamon Melaugh, who had recently visited the children of the Salaam Baalak orphanage in Delhi.
It was his aim to raise enough money to provide the 63 children there with a Christmas Day dinner. Mr. Melaugh said: “The overwhelming support and incredibly kind donations ensured that we were able to feed children in not one but three orphanages in India. Action With Effect volunteers also handed out hundreds of food parcels to those living in the street encampments on Christmas Day thanks to money raised through the appeal.
“One Derry person visited our shop and made a donation of £500. The generosity of the Derry people is fantastic. It really was a very generous reaction to our Christmas appeal, we literally had a plethora of people streaming in to our offices to make a donation.” Over £1,000 was handed to Action With Effect in the wake of the appeal but the final amount has yet to be calculated. I don’t know how I can sufficiently thank all those who donated. They helped put warm meals into the stomach of children who would otherwise have had very little to be happy about on Christmas Day.”
