A pop-up cinema will be in Ebrington Square in the weeks leading up to Christmas, the Journal can reveal.

The cinema, which will be managed by local events management company, Compass Events Management, will be screening four movies a day in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

When contacted by The Derry Journal on Thursday, Derry City Council confirmed that a pop-up cinema will open its doors to the public in Ebrington Square on November 28.

The cinema will hold 75 people and it will screen such Christmas movies as ‘Elf’,’Home Alone’ and film classics ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘Star Wars’.

There will be four screenings per day and both warm and cold refreshments will be available.

“We are delighted to confirm that this year’s Christmas market will be offering fun for all the family with some exciting additional features including a pop-up Christmas Cinema,” confirmed a Derry City Council spokesperson.

“The cinema will host daily screenings for all ages in its Festive Film Factory located in Ebrington’s magical Christmas Village. The viewings will take place at 12noon, 2.30pm, 5pm and 8pm over the Christmas period.”

The cinema will not be only the attraction inside the Christmas Village in Ebrington. There will be live music and the LegenDerry Ice Rink will also return.

“The Village will have a whole host of entertainment for all including live music, a magical Christmas Funfair, and the fantastic LegenDerry Ice Rink, to keep the family entertained as the grown-ups peruse the gorgeous array of gifts in the popular Christmas market.

“The city centre will also be a hive of festive activity with special themed activities based in the Craft Village on December 6 and 7, 13 and 14, 1pm-5pm each day. Youngsters can enjoy storytelling, arts and crafts and puppet shows - and all for only £1.

“Don’t forget the big Christmas Lights Switch On which returns to the Guildhall Square this year on November 20, when we welcome Santa to the city for a LegenDerry festive celebration,” the spokesperson added.
