Local people are asked to wrap warm for the night.

The fun starts at 6.30pm with the switch on taking place at 7pm and entertainment continuing to 8pm.

The festive season will sparkle this Christmas as the 2013 UK City of Culture, Derry, continues to shine with a host of legenderry festive events throughout November and December.

Mayor Colr Martin Reilly, announcing details of the city’s festive time Christmas offering said: “The city has added a number of events to an extensive programme of cultural activity. From the traditional Santa arrival and Switch On of the Christmas lights in Ebrington Square to the Festival of Trees, a Christmas Market plus a Legenderry Ice Rink, all bringing an extra sparkle to the festive season.

“Combine these traditional family events with the international Lumière festival and Turner Prize exhibition and a visit to the city this Christmas will be truly Legenderry.”

Festive fun and excitement will continue with Timmy the Elf as he explores Santa’s Toy Cupboard at Guildhall Square and young elves across the city can enjoy Timmy’s Toy Trail also at Guildhall Square from November 23 – 24.

A key element of this year’s programme is a focus on lights and illumination when the city will be lit up as part of the Festival of Trees. Over 100 trees across the city centre will sparkle creating a unique festive atmosphere.

On December 10 Guildhall Square will be transformed into a traditional Christmas market until December 21, with 40 traders offering a range of Christmas fayre from mince pies to mulled wine, Christmas crafts and unique festive treats.

A welcome addition to this year’s billing is Legenderry on Ice, when Ebrington Square will be transformed into an ice rink from 12 December to 19 January.

It is the perfect traditional family outing and guaranteed to be a huge hit over the festive period.
