Derry’s Christmas Lights switch on will this year have a new venue.
Guildhall Square has traditionally been the setting for the switch on. But yesterday the Development Committee agreed to moving the ceremony to Ebrington Square.
Sinn Féin Councillor Elisha McCallion this morning said the switch on would also move to a Friday night.
“The annual switch on of the Christmas Lights will be moved to Ebrington Square this year, and the ceremony will be moved to a Friday night.
“Over recent years the crowds attending this event have been on the increase and with it being City of Culture year it’s anticipated that the crowd could be the biggest we have seen yet.
“So it’s important that we take on board all the health and safety concerns and plan accordingly. We have seen with the recent Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann the sort of crowds that have turned out for outdoor events during 2013 .
“Moving the event to a Friday night will hopefully allow more families to attend and bring in people from outside the city.
“I think it’s also important to reassure people that the large Christmas tree outside the Guildhall will still be there this year,” she said.
