Church leaders in Derry are inviting people to get on their bikes - or their running shoes - to participate in this year’s “Tour de Foyle” Charity Cycle & 10K Run.

The event will take place on Saturday, August 29, and will set off from the new Foyle Arena at approximately 7.30am.

The event is being planned by the North West Methodist Mission, the Churches’ Trust and is supported by the four main church leaders in Derry.

The event will build upon the highly successful inaugural “Tour de Foyle” held in 2014 in which more than 140 people participated.

The event raised £4,000 for NWMM Homeless and the Churches Trust Food bank projects.

The event encourages cyclists to undertake a scenic lap of Lough Foyle (50 miles approximately).

Leaving the Foyle Arena, participants will cycle to Magilligan and, after a brief ‘pit stop’, will then board the ferry across to Greencastle.

The route will then proceed back to Derry where it will cross the Peace Bridge into St Columb’s Park, finishing back at the Foyle Arena.

Building on the growing trend towards getting fit and healthy living, the idea is simply to bring people together from all communities across the city and beyond to raise some funds for two very worthy local causes.

It is billed as a fun event and open to everyone from the beginner to the more experienced cyclist.

The organisers have decided to incorporate a 10k run into this year’s event.

Like the cycle, it’s all about taking part and is open to everyone from the novice to the expert runner and involves a scenic route.

A spokesperson for the organisers said: “By taking part in the Tour de Foyle Cycle or the 10k Charity Run, participants will be helping people in their own community who are experiencing difficult times in their lives and are working with the help of our charities to get things back on track.

“So, please help us continue to help put people’s lives back on track by getting on your bike or putting on your running shoes on August 29.

Registration will open on June 25 and close on August 26.
