Civic reception plans for local talent

There are plans to honour a numnber of Inishowen sports people who have amassed significant achievements over the last year.

The peninsula’s councillors are hoping to hold a Civic Reception to pay tribute to a number of groups and individuals which will include the Inishowen tug-o-war worls medal winners, Oliver Doherty who took home a broze medal in the Special Olympics, rugby’s Nora Stapleton and the Carndonagh Community School FAI Schools Senior Cup winners, among others.

The Councillors also want to hold the event in the peninsula instead of the Council office in Lifford, stating the people are from Inishowen and should be honoured in their locality.

The possibility of holding an event was raised by Councillor Rena Donaghey who asked if a civic reception could be held for the Tug-O-War team, who took home a haul of medals from the world event in Dublin.

Colr Donaghey, who said her nephew was one of the winning men, told Councillors at the Inishowen Municipal District meeting that had the men been from any other part of the country their win would have been on RTE news. She said the deserved to be commended and celebrated for their endeavour.

Councillor Nicholas Crossan agreed, stating there was a “wealth of talent” in Inishowen, with men and women being commended in the Special Olympics and in weightlifting, among others. He said this talent should be honoured. Councillor Crossan proposed that the reception be held in Inishowen.

Councillor Albert Doherty also gave his support, highlighting the “great achievement” by Carndonagh Community School, which he said should also be honoured.

He said the peninsula had “great sportspeople who are recognised nationally” and also paid tribute to the Glengad FC who represented the peninsula with “great pride” over the weekend as well as Dermot O’Brien and his “group of sports men” who are also representing the peninsula. Councillors Martin McDermott and Martin Farren agreed.

Councillor Paul Canning said that if the reception was to be held in Lifford, it would have to be scheduled into the Mayor’s diary. He said that Inishowen had its own chairperson and a number of venues in which the event could take place. Councillor John Ryan said he was on the Corporate Policy Group with Colr Canning and that there was an already significant list of receptions in waiting. He said it would be best to do it at local level.Councillor Crossan said some councils held a night reception night each year and it was agrred that an event will be organised.
