Clipper Bursary - are you ready for a global challenge?

If you are over 18, unemployed and in receipt of benefits and up for a challenge then the opportunity of a lifetime might be sailing over the horizon towards you in the form of the Clipper Bursary 2011-2012.

Applications are now open to become part of the Derry-Londonderry team on board the Clipper Yacht which will is taking part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Closing date is Monday 16th May at 12 noon, so now is the time to think to your future!.

Speaking on behalf of Clipper 2011-2012 partners, Claire Lundy from Derry City Council said: “ the ethos of the Clipper race is that it is for non-professional sailors, it is the longest yacht race on the planet and Derry City Council believe it is important that the clipper sailing experience accessible to as many people as possible. We’re delighted to be working with Clipper and our partners to secure five bursaries for this once in a lifetime opportunity”.

The bursary covers race joining fees, training, travel and accommodation, insurance and visa requirements. A clothing allowance for sailing kit is included as well as a travel allowance to assist with travelling to and from the race leg. No previous sailing experience is required as the pre-race Clipper Training programme takes complete novices and teaches them everything they need to know to be a safe and competent member of the crew.

Successful applicants will have to make a time commitment to training during June and July. The Clipper Crew comes from all walks of life postmen, housewives, engineers, students, anyone in fact. The youngest members are 18 years of age but there is no upper age limit. The Clipper 2011-12 Race will last eleven months setting off in August 2011 and returning in July 2012. If you are successful in being awarded one of the bursaries you will be involved in one of the following legs of the race which will last between six to eight weeks.
