The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane, Councillor Elisha McCallion, has congratulated the winners of a Council sponsored bursary scheme which will see four lucky local individuals embark on an exciting sailing adventure with the 2015-16 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

The successful budding seafarers, who were originally expecting to spend four weeks undertaking the crew training experience at Clipper Race HQ near Portsmouth this summer, found out yesterday that they will also receive the once in a lifetime chance of joining the crews for a leg of the epic race.

The local winners have been named as Jilly St John aged 32, Keelin O’ Kane aged 19, David Pollock aged 31 and Conor Shortland aged 22. The ‘Your Next Chapter’ bursary was open to people aged 18 and over, who are currently unemployed, participating in an employability programme, or in receipt of benefits, and living in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area. The Mayor said the training would provide them an opportunity to learn skills that will aid them in both their lives.
