As a flagship festival in NI 2012, the Clipper Homecoming Maritime Festival from 29th June – 08th July, will welcome a ten-strong fleet of ten 68-foot Clipper yachts to the River Foyle as part of their transatlantic leg of the world’s longest international yacht race.

It is the first time Northern Ireland has been represented in the race with the Derry~Londonderry yacht entry and it is also the first time that the race has visited the region. So there are many reasons to celebrate and that’s exactly what the city does really well!

Derry–Londonderry has a fantastic track record with outdoor events. Combine this with a long and illustrious maritime history, and you have a very uniquely welcoming Clipper Homecoming event. It promises a colourful riverfront, musical celebrations, cultural performances, markets, exhibitions and a spectacular fleet send-off on the 07th July.

And the countdown to the arrival is well underway. Having left Southampton in August 2011, the race has so far taken the crews to Rio de Janeiro, South Africa, China, Australia, and West Coast USA, in what has been a thrilling and at times dramatic adventure.

A global audience of over 400million are having the chance to follow the race and the city has captured this opportunity with initiatives to bring the city’s new story around the world. More importantly it has extended an invitation to connect with the city as it gets ready to become the inaugural UK City of Culture 2013.

In addition to these international connections the Clipper experience is also about local opportunity. With a successful bursary programme, education programme and a world class maritime festival underway, Clipper 11-12 will create a lasting legacy for the River Foyle and the communities within the city.

So why not get on board the Clipper experience, whether as a volunteer, a community ambassador, a business partner or a clipper visitor. Find out more by visiting us at www. www.derrycity.gov.uk/clipper or like us on FACEBOOK derrylondonderryclipper11-12.
