'˜Clooney works willsave people's lives'

Roads Minister Chris Hazzard announced the funding allocation for a resurfacing and reconstruction scheme on the A2 Clooney Road at Judges Road, Maydown, on Monday.

Sinn Féin Councillor Paul Fleming said: “I am pleased that this vital work is taking place. We have been raising concerns about this section of road over the last number of years. Residents have also been campaigning about safety issues along it.

“In November past our Sinn Féin council team held a meeting with the Transport NI Divisional Manager, and his staff.

“We raised a number of important issues across the City and District.

“Top of our agenda was the ongoing issues with the Clooney Road Dual Carriageway.

“This is a very busy road with hundreds of vehicles using it daily so on that basis clearly something needed to be done there as a matter of urgency.

“Hopefully this work will now address those concerns and improve safety.”

Community worker Paul Hughes said: “On behalf of Enagh Youth Forum and the Strathfoyle Community Empowerment Project, I would like to welcome the Ministers announcement that work is due to commence next week on the accident hot spot at the Clooney Road dual carriageway.

“I have no doubt that these works when completed will save lives. Fair play to all local people for their endless campaigning and in particular I would like to express thanks to local resident Joe Kirk who has been campaigning on this issue for a very long time.”
