Colaiste Chineal Eoghain have winning formula

Pupils from Coláiste Chineál Eoghain in Buncrana are gearing up for the national final of the prestigious Formula 1 in Schools competition in May. The team, known as Realtra Rasaíochta, qualified by being first past the chequered flag at the regional heats in Castlebar .

Realtra Rasaíochta’s beaming sponsorship and communications manager, Orla McCracken revealed her team had also scooped the Best Engineered Car award in Mayo.

“The standard of competition in Castlebar was very high. It is a fantastic achievement for us to qualify for the national final, which is being held in Dublin Castle on May 2. We are really excited to be travelling up to Dublin and a little bit nervous too.

“Since coming together in September, the whole Realtra Rasaíochta team has put a tremendous amount of hard work into the Formula 1 in Schools project.

The first year students: Lucy Herron, Cáit NÍ Cheallaigh, Sophie Doherty-Roe and I worked very well together with the second years: Matthew Mullins and Éanna McLaughlin.

“The lucky winners of the national final will progress to the world final in Abu Dhabi. It would be absolutely fantastic if Team Realtra Rasaíochta had the honour of representing Ireland at that level.

“Readers can follow our journey on Twitter @realtrarasiocht,” she added.

Realtra Rasaíochta’s design engineer, Matthew Mullins explained the thinking behind the Formula 1 in Schools competition.

He said: “Formula 1 in Schools is a nationwide competition aimed at post-primary school students. They are tasked with designing and manufacturing mini formula 1 cars, which are then raced against each other.
