Despite everything, including the lacerations left by Stormont’s DEL committee on, among others, the “change manager” responsible for implementation of consultant Harry McConnell’s report on industrial relations, old practices remain in place. An action plan based on McConnell’s report was drawn up. The Stormont committee was told this was “out for consultation”. But as late as last Friday, the lecturers, union, the UCU, had not been contacted, much less consulted.
When the DEL committee asked change manager William Laverty for examples of change, he said, “If you go to the college’s Strand Road building....a large computer screen which changes its graphics regularly...good news stories.....a stack of leaflets - well several leaflets - have been issued by HR on stress and bullying...”
Laverty is on 30 grand a year for two days work a week. And this is what he comes up with. And the Governing Body nods its approval.
The UCU called at the weekend for the immediate appointment of an acting chair of the GB, mandated specifically to be done with shilly-shallying and to get a grip on what is developing into a serious crisis.
What a mess.
