Like many of you, I’ve often wondered just what it is a Director of Football does.

One man who is in no doubt, however, is the new Manchester City Director of Football Txiki Begiristain.

After leaving his job at Barcelona in 2010, he was interview for the Director of Football job at Chelsea. Althlugh not successful in that application, Begiristain certainly put down a marker for future reference in terms of the role. He told the media; “It’s not enough to have a technical director, who only deals with the academy and grassroots work. He’s also got to be able to influence the first team as well and be able to take his vision forward.”

The man he’s replacing at Man City, Brian Marwood, probably subscribes to the same philosophy but was kept firmly out of first team affairs by manager Roberto Mancini. On the transfer front, Mancini was never shy to let the media know that this player or that player was not his ‘buy’ and he hung Marwood out to dry on several occasions.

The former president of Barcelona described bringing in Begiristain as “the best decision I ever made” so thi sguy comes with a reputation and almost certainly an ego to match.

With Mancini not short himself in the ego stakes, the stage is set for an eventual showdown. In the words of the song, ‘There could be trouble ahead’.
