Derry man Charlie Thompson is to fulfill a lifetime ambition by racing across the Atlantic in the Clipper Race - but he’ll be representing Edinburgh rather than his home town.
The Belfast-based 39 year-old business consultant was pipped at the post for a place on the ‘Legenderry’ crew aboard the ‘Derry~Londonderry’ entry for the homecoming stage of the round the world race. But he was determined to take part in the gruelling 3,800 miles final leg - which will sail into Derry next month - and will now make the transatlantic crossing on the Edinburgh Inspiring Capital clipper.
“In participating in the longest Round the World Yacht Race I will be fulfilling one of my lifetime ambitions and crossing one more item off my life’s bucket list,” he said. During the event, Charlie - who funded his own berth aboard the racing yacht - hopes to raise as much as possible for the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice, supporting life-limited children and young people. He is appealing for donations to “the very worthy cause” to be made by clicking the following link: www.justgiving.com/clipperroundtheworld11-12
