Community archaeology at Prehen House this Saturday

Prehen House.
Prehen House.

Prehen House will host a community archaeological dig this Saturday. The event, described as family friendly, will run from 1-4pm and everyone is welcome. Members of the public are invited to come and meet some of 17th Century characters from Prehen as history will be brought to life by actors in period costume. Young and old alike will be given the opportunity to get their hands dirty working with a trowel. However a number of professionals will be there to guide them in their endeavours.

The dig, which has already discovered that a fortified house stood on the site prior to the existing Prehen House, is turning up many more interesting features on the site.

Local archaeologists, who are three weeks into the dig, have been assisted by lots of volunteers from the area who are contributing to their efforts.

Members of the public are invited to turn up on site, without appointment between 1-4pm on Saturday.

The dig is being organised in association with Derry City Council’s Heritage and Museum Service. Follow the progress on http://legenderrydigs.blogspot.co.uk
