Gleneely Post Office is to close its doors today.
The move has been taken after An Post decided not to advertise for a new postmaster, following the retirement of Kevin McLaughlin.
The local community strongly opposed the closure of the service, with a meeting held in February in the Gleneely Colts Clubhouse.Culdaff Post Office will take over all services from Gleneely from today.
An Post said it made the decision after taking into account network coverage needs; the level of business at the office; customer access to services elsewhere and the capacity of neighbouring offices to handle the business.
The news is seen as a big blow to Gleneely. Local election candidate Mary McCauley said she was “very disappointed” to see the loss of another service. She added: “I attended every meeting on the future of the Post Office and it was clear that there was an appetite for the retention of the service.”
